Following this, both the sperm and eggs are incubated in a controlled environment, awaiting the formation of a healthy embryo.
  4. Transferring of the Embryo: This is the culmination of the IVF process. After 5 days of incubation, the Blastocyst is chosen for transfer. A speculum is gently placed into the vagina, and the selected embryo is transferred using a soft plastic tube. This tube is carefully navigated through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. Precision is key here, ensuring the embryo is placed in the optimal location for implantation.
  5. Supporting Embryo Development: After the embryo transfer, the journey is far from over. It’s of paramount importance to create an environment conducive to the embryo’s growth. This means limiting strenuous physical activity and adhering to prescribed medications. These medications often include hormones that support the uterine lining, ensuring it’s receptive to the implanting embryo.

Techniques like ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) are employed where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. However, the quality of the sperm can influence the success of fertilization and subsequent embryo development.
  5. Realistic Expectations: It’s crucial for couples to approach IVF with a balanced perspective. While the procedure has witnessed remarkable success stories, it’s not a guaranteed solution. Multiple cycles might be needed, and even then, success isn’t assured.
  6. Reduced Miscarriage Risks with Genetic Screening: One of the advantages of IVF is the ability to screen embryos for genetic abnormalities before implantation, a process known as Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT). This not only increases the chances of implanting a healthy embryo but also significantly reduces the risk of miscarriage.
